Problem = E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock

Why does it happen ?? It happens when synaptic or another package update / installation application is already running.

Solution = Close any other package managers (including Add/Remove application, language pack installer, etc.) and retry.

That didn't work!! Now what ?? Well, don`t worry. just type this command in the terminal. Everything would be fine.

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock

Ubuntu Speed up booting time by hiding the GRUB MENU

Links to this post

As you know the GRUB MENU lets you chose between different operating systems in Ubuntu. How ever the menu waits 10 or more seconds for the user to pick or edit the system. Here is the way to disable that 10 seconds to speed up the time for booting.

In terminal type

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

This will open the grub menu. BECAREFUL OF WHAT YOUR DOING. Next find the phrase

GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

Now change it to GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

Save it by pressing Ctrl+O

Now you have to update your GRUB. To do this simply type

sudo update-grub

Good luck !!!!

Ubuntu slow ??? How to speed up Ubuntu

Links to this post

Have you ever felt like Ubuntu is slow on your laptop or your old desktop ???
This is a problem I had and you have. Well the thing is its not THAT simple. You need to have a basic idea of whats happening in order to do something about it. So I would be writing a small guide as what is happening.

Here are two things you can change to boost up the speed of Ubuntu.

  1. Desktop Environment
  2. File Manager

Let me see now. Does your computer freeze often. Is it hard to drag your windows here and there. Takes a lot of time to open an application. Can't do something else without your music player freezing suddenly ???? Well you better consider changing your desktop environment.

NoteIts not always the desktop environments fault for the above reasons.

Introduction to Desktop Environment

So what is a desktop environment ?? Well basically a desktop environment typically consists of icons, windows, tool bars, folders, wallpapers and desktop widgets. Your DESKTOP. Unfortunately there are lots of Linux desktop environments out there. And its impossible and useless for me to write about each and every one of them here. Thus here are some famous desktop environments.

Note The ram usage I have mentioned here is a roughly calculated. My aim here is to give you a rough idea about the ram usage of each individual environment.
Hence if your PC is slow use a lighter ram usage desktop environment.

Example – if you have a PC with 256 MB of RAM Use a lighter environment like Xfce or LXDE rather than KDE.

Desktop environment
Distributer
Roughly Ram Needed
KDE
Kubuntu
Around 1000 MB
GNOME
Ubuntu
Around 720 MB
Xfce
Xubuntu
Around 340 MB
LXDE
Lubuntu
Around 260 MB

Getting the desktop environments

Desktop Environment
Terminal Command
KDE
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
GNOME
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Xfce
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
LXDE
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

Does opening folders take time ?? you know when you double click the home folder it takes about 10-15 seconds to open it?? Well then the problem is your file manager takes a lot of ram in PC. So what you could do is get an simple, low resource using file manager.

Introduction to file manager

A file manager or file browser is a computer program that provides a user interface to work with file systems. The most common operations performed on files or groups of files are: create, open, edit, view, print, play, rename, move, copy, delete, search/find, and modify file attributes, properties and file permissions.

File manager
Desktop Environment
Roughly Ram Needed
Dolphin
Kubuntu

Nautilus
Ubuntu
Around 240 MB
Thunar
Xubuntu
Around 140 MB
PCMan
Lubuntu
Around 100 MB
Xfe

Around 80 MB

Note - I tried really hard but couldn't find information or comparison of individual speeds or ram usage of the above file managers.

Getting the File managers

File Manager
Terminal Command
Thunar
sudo apt-get install thunar
PCMan
sudo apt-get install pcmanfm
Xfe
sudo apt-get install Xfe

Facebook " Hidden Friend Requests "

Links to this post

I confirmed a friend on FB today and noticed at the bottom it said "hidden requests". I clicked on that and there were some other friend requests which I haven’t seen before. I didn't know either person so I didn't accept them. It then gave me a message that FB wouldn't allow those two to contact me again.

When someone sent you a friend request, you can mark “Not Now,” thereby shifting their request to a separate menu called “Hidden Requests.” You can then confirm the person later in this menu, if you want, and in the meantime they’ll just see that they’re “awaiting friend confirmation” from you in the interface.

I really don't understand the point of a "hidden" friend request. Why would someone request to be friends and when I deny it ; hide it ???? I have no idea how long they were sitting in there.

Facebook is making rapid changes but they do more bad than good. There's a group in fb about my topic. Give a spin and see….

Any one know Diaspora official release date???

Things you shouldn’t do to a girl

Links to this post

1. Make fun of their face, body or clothes.

2. Overuse sarcasm.

It's one thing to joke, and trust me girls like that but don't use sarcasm with them if they don't get what you say it really annoys them.

3. Flirt with other girls OR talk about other girls even for fun.

It just makes them angry. And mainly don't talk about her or other girls body parts. I don't know how many of you does that but don't do it!!!!

4. Say "I Love You" when you actually don't mean it.

Don't really say that for fun because sometimes they take it personally.

5. Deny things that are true.

If a girl confronts you about something its kinda obvious that she knows the truth. Denying it makes her more
